Levi experienced his first real thunderstorm this evening. We really don't get lightning and thunder here in Hawaii. We get LOTS of rain, but not so much on the loud thunder and bright lights. He may have heard a few thunder claps here and there over the last 2 1/2 years, but tonight was the first time it's happened while he's old enough to care and be involved. Every time it rains loud enough, he always gets excited and says, "Open the door. See big rain." Thus, we go open the front door and sit on the floor mat watching it rain in our driveway. The last several days it's been raining like you wouldn't believe. Copious downfalls all day and night. It's flooding all over the Island. We're fine at our house cause we live right in the middle of the Island, where we have no nearby body of water to flood us out. And we live in the "heights" so the rain flows down our street away from us. But, it's pretty bad for others who live in different areas. People are having to evacuate their houses and go to shelters.
Consequently, accompanying this insane onslaught of rain is actual lightning and thunder. So, tonight when Levi asked to open the door and see the big rain we ended up storm watching like good 'ol mid-westerners.
(oooo Levi just brought me a slightly moist and melting Hershey's kiss. That was nice)
ah, back to our weather report. It was fun to experience this for the first time with him. We sat on our front step, just beyond the reach of the rain and watched the sky. I told Levi that the bright light was the lightning, and the loud noise was the thunder and he only needed to be told once. From there he taught Pippin all about it. Pippin is assigned to sit right next to Levi on the rug, of course. Levi kept directing Pippin's head so that he would look "up in a guy." (the sky) And he played both sides of their conversation. He'd say, "See the lightning and thunder?" for Pippin he would say, "Where" then he would reply as himself, "There, up in a guy" as he points. And then for Pippin again he would say, "Oh! There. Up in a guy!" It was fun to watch. Only once did he act even remotely afraid. He jumped into my lap saying the thunder was too loud and the lightning was gonna get him. (Oh! Too loud. Light-en-aning a givinin' a me) That's how he says that. And I just smiled and said, "no, it's not gonna get you. It's all the way up in the sky. It's fun!" He agreed, and that was that.

I'm glad Levi's not afraid of things. His Papa loved to watch storms out the west doors at our house. They would rool in and we would count the seconds between the lighting and the thunder. Seconds = miles. Like father like son. Cool.
