Earthquake

Well, we've now survived an earthquake! We are all safe and doing well. No worries. I know allot of you heard the news and were probably praying for us. Thank you. About the most that happened to us was losing our electricity. That made us not really be able to eat until about 5pm, and it kept Nathan from watching his Broncos game. He was pretty affected by that. Thank God Levi doesn't need electricity to eat his food. He was just fine. We attempted to cook food on our grill, but we had about three pieces of charcoal left so it didn't really work out. It just turned into a fun game for Nathan. The pictures below are pretty much our reactions to the earthquake. Nathan tried to work around it, I was frightened by it at first, but mostly just hungry later, and Levi...really just didn't care.

Like I said, we didn't have electricity, so we played cards and took naps. That's about it. Our house has lots of large windows, so we didn't really even need candles. Which is good, cause we unplugged our smoke alarms. They were so obnoxious! Apparently when you lose electricity, your smoke alarms want you to know that they're running off batteries. So, they beep....all the live long day. Levi was having trouble with one of his naps. I told Nathan he probably thought there was some devil bird perched in his room incessantly chirping at him. Perhaps it wasn't so smart to have them unplugged during our attempt to cook out. But, we made it through.
From what I can gather, I guess the big Island of Hawaii is where most of the damage happened, and where the actual big earthquake hit. I think a big one hit in Honolulu also, (which is about 15 miles from us) but I'm not positive. There are mixed stories so far. We'll have the facts eventually. What we experienced was an aftershock. I don't know how large it was. But it freaked us out! We were both awake because we were planning on going to church that morning. It was about 7am. I was sitting in bed with our puppy and Nathan was walking towards the bathroom. I personally thought perhaps the exercist was under the bed. That was just my first conclusion. I mean, really, what else could it be? The bed was shaking, afterall. So I shakily got off the bed and ran towards Nathan, who told me to go stand in Levi's room while he checked around the house. The shaking probably only lasted 15 seconds perhaps. It seemed longer though. Anyway, Levi didn't even notice. He was awake just talking in his crib.
Nothing fell off the walls or anything like that. I thought I heard something crash, but I think it was just the noise of the rumbling. Weird, eh? Then a couple minutes after the shaking, our electiricy went off. I think most of the power outages, at least on Oahu, were actually for safety reasons. The power plants automatically shut down the power during a disaster, and then it takes them several hours to make sure it's safe to turn it back on, grid by grid.
So, like I said, all is well. It was a long day, but in the big picture, we really were hardly even affected. We have, however, been through some major natural disasters. Tornados in Missouri, Hurricanes in Florida, and now an earthquake in Hawaii. We rock! Posted by Picasa
